Welcome to Winter Quarter

Dear Sophomores,

Welcome back (belatedly) to Winter Quarter! I can't believe it's Friday of 1st Week already.

Winter quarter is a very busy one for sophomores -- below is a highlight of some of the opportunities, responsibilities, and deadlines that come up this quarter. Look for a new calendar poster showing these events going up in the residence halls and Dewing Commons sometime soon! • Study Abroad: Long-term and extended-term study abroad applications are due January 15. For those of you going on a spring short-term program, the first deadline (deposit, confirmation health history, etc.) is today!
• Declaration of Major: You must declare a major on (or by) Declaration of Major Day on February 7th, Thursday of 5th Week. There will be tables to sign up for any major, as well as celebratory cake, during Common Time (11:30 - 12:30) in the Fine Arts Lobby.
   
  In preparation for that, there are three related events Tuesday afternoon, January 22nd:
  • A Departmental Student Advisor (DSA) Fair, with students in each major available to answer questions. (4 - 5:30, Dewing Commons)
  • A "Major" Decision workshops sponsored by the Center for Career Development, to help you assess your major and/or career interests. (Pick either 5pm or 6pm, in a room near the DSA Fair.)
  • Making a Good Decision workshops sponsored by the Counseling Center. (Pick either 5pm or 6pm, in a room near the DSA Fair.)
• There will also be a 4 and Forever event on determining career options, on January 24th.
• Externships: The Externship catalogue will be available February 8th (the day after Declaration of Major Day). Applications will be due February 20th. If you're offered an externship, you will have to accept it by March 17th (the first day of Exam Week).

Also watch for resume-writing workshops and career counseling available this quarter.

There's a lot going on this quarter, but I hope it is a healthy and productive one for you, as well as being a busy one! Find ways to bring some color into your life, since the sun isn't likely to help in that regard, make time for friends and fun activities (and sleep), as well as for studying, and I'm sure you'll hear from me soon!
