Note: The textbook contains six different types of side notes. You should always read the first three types: Quality Tips, Common Errors, and Productivity Hints. The Quality Tips contain important information on good programming style. Reading the Common Errors notes will help you avoid well-known pitfalls. The Productivity Hints are sometimes more challenging, but helpful. You should also generally read the Advanced Topics and How To sections unless I specify otherwise. Random Facts are optional -- read them if you find them interesting.



The book has a Student Companion web site that includes web-only features (such as source code that appears in the book and some of the Productivity Hints or Random Facts) and also has a list of any typos that have been found. You can get to the website by going to www.wiley.com/college/horstmann, then clicking on the picture of our textbook (5th Edition of Java Concepts), and then clicking on the "Go to the Student Companion Site" link within the "Students" box. Or you can click on this Student Companion Site link directly. From there, click on the appropriate Resource link, such as "Source Code" or "Features: By Chapter". For example, you could find Productivity Hint 1.2 by going to the Student Companion Site, clicking on Features: By Chapter, clicking on Chapter 1, then clicking on Productivity Hint 1.2.

  • Read through Tuesday's lab on design. Read Chapter 12.
• Discussion questions:
  • Exercises R10.5 and R10.12 on inheritance.

Week 8: Tuesday

• Programming Project #6 is due at the beginning of lab.

Week 8: Wednesday

• Reading assignment:
  • Scope, Cohesion, Packages: Read any sections of Chapter 8 (omitting section 8.10) that you haven't read yet.
• Discussion questions:
  • Review Exercises R8.28 - R8.30 and R8.32.

Week 8: Friday

• Reading assignment:
  • Sorting: Read Chapter 14, Sections 14.1 - 14.3.
  • Using Comparable, Arrays and Collections: Read Chapter 14, Section 14.8.
  • Read the Chapter Summary and list of Classes, Objects, and Methods introduced in Chapter 14.

Looking Ahead:

• Discussion questions for Monday of Ninth Week will be Review Exercises R14.2, R14.10 - R14.12.

• You may want to review the document on writing methods (Word document) that was available before the midterm.
• Some practice on writing methods is also available.
